Anti-Utilitarianism

The scope of criticism of utilitarianism is wide, whether on ethical grounds or on prac­tical issues. Such criticism can be accommodated by utilitarianism with refinements. These refinements constitute the focus of this section. However, this critical movement has also induced a sort of “non-utility revolution”, both in political philosophy and nor­mative economics. Notice that most alternative approaches would not call themselves anti-utilitarian - though a notable exception is the Mouvement Anti-Utilitariste dans les Sciences Sociales (MAUSS) project (see, for example, Caille 2006) - but at most post-welfarist.
